McCLOUD

ShowLogo
In this country only one NBC Mystery Movie segment, Columbo, ever achieved a certain degree of popularity. In the US, however, McCloud and McMillan and Wife respectively were blessed with similar success. The latter ran for 6 years and made it to 40 episodes, it starred Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James. McCloud ran from 1970 to 1977. A reunion TV movie was made in 1989. ALL 47 episodes made it to the German screens, although in a very chaotic way and over a period of 15 years.

McCloud may be inferior as an intellectual challenge to viewers if compared to Columbo, but then the two shows belong to diametrically opposed generic traditions. Whilst the latter appeals to supporters of classic detective shows the former is a (mostly tasteful) blend of humour and action. It has many elements which (should) assure cult status for the series: most prominent of all the brilliant interaction of the two leads, Dennis Weaver and J. D Cannon. Also in McCloud's favour works the guest cast, an impressive contingent of well-known US television stars.

J.D. Cannon (Chief Clifford)
McCloud owes its creation to Don Siegel's 1968 feature film Coogan's Bluff in which a blunt hillbilly cop (played by Clint Eastwood) is assigned to escort a prisoner (the impeccable and inimitable Don Stroud) to New York. When the villain escapes and must be retrieved Coogan's unorthodox methods arouse the dissatisfaction of the local police chief (Lee J. Cobb). Whilst in the film Coogan leaves New York after the successful conclusion of his mission, the series' premise is, What happens, if the cowboy remains...?

Coogan writer Herman Miller (the film script was co-written by Siegel regulars Dean Riesner and Howard Rodman) is credited as creator of McCloud. That seems like a measure of political correctness because his involvement with the series was absolutely nil. The project was masterminded by prolific writer/producer Glen A. Larson, who acquired not least because of McCloud a reputation of recycling others' material for television. At the time Larson had been responsible for the last season of The Virginian, under the new title The Men from Shiloh.

As a matter of course the television version was toned down and featured less violence. Also the hero became somewhat more accessible via country bumpkin charm (without making him look ridiculous), less like Eastwood's reticent renegade cop. The product as a whole had a strong injection of comedy.

In 1978, when Mystery Movie and thus McCloud were off-air in the US, German ARD-TV showed a selection of 13 episodes, which were repeated in 1981 on the same channel. In the following decade they were occasionally shown by private channels:

Der schnellste Colt von Manhattan (The New Mexican Connection)
Ein glorreicher Bandit (The Park Avenue Rustlers)
Die Viehdiebe (The Colorado Cattle Caper)
Bonnie und McCloud (Bonnie and McCloud)
Fünfter Mann im Streichquartett (Fifth Man in a String Quartet)
Cowboy im Paradies (Cowboy in Paradise)
Abgerechnet wird am Schluß (Encounter With Aries)
Die Schlacht von Manhattan (Return to the Alamo)
Der Cowboy mit der Maske (The Concrete Jungle Caper)
Das Spiel mit dem Tod (Shivaree on Delancy Street)
Die drei Gesetzlosen (Three Guns For New York)
Die Rächerin (The Great Taxi Cab Stampede)
Der Cowboy und das Mädchen (Showdown at the End of the World)

These episodes are not the best from a technical or content-orientated viewpoint. A wide variety of cases and scenery/locations, rather, was the basis for selection. Showdown and Park Avenue must be called the real gems here.

In 1984 ARD-TV showed a single episode, The Man With the Golden Hat, as individual television film in the Saturday Night Movie slot. This segment (like Showdown) again featured Jaclyn Smith in a pre-Charlie's Angels role and did not fail to impress. After that it took full 7 years until RTL showed another ten episodes. Whilst RTL handled Columbo and Magnum, p.i. with care and passion no such were applied to McCloud – on the contrary. The series title was slightly modified. The credits were mutilated, amateur "Ersatz" credits were inserted. The Man With the Golden Hat was dubbed again and given a new title. Worst of all the beautiful title music of the later episodes was replaced by its predecessor. A mess! In 1992/3 freshly launched RTL2 showed all the remaining episodes, probably leftovers originally bought by RTL2 and hidden in the vaults due to a lack of a suitable time slot or to a complete shift in station policy.

McCloud occasionally wrecks your nerves by means of sloppy process photography. Driving through the streets of NY visibly takes place in the studio etc. Bonnie and McCloud and Return to the Alamo spring to mind. The long format sometimes is admittedly overlong: depending on your mood it can be tough to sit through the overly sentimental parts of The Million Dollar Roundup.

The pilot, in which Peter Mark Richman plays Clifford, is an excellent directorial job courtesy of Richard Colla. To no small extent it benefits from generous location shooting. In contrast to that the Four in One segments were obviously subject to considerable limitations. Location shooting is rare, and there is only a handful of speaking roles per episode. Remarkable entries, nevertheless, can be found during this period (Who Says You Can't Make Friends in New York City and Horse Stealing On Fifth Avenue).

Production values improved in the next season when McCloud was shown under the umbrella title of Mystery Movie and Dean Hargrove took over as producer. More complicated, intriguing plots provided suspense, high-calibre guest appearances became the rule. Ideally the extension to 75 minutes allowed for stories which were better developed and gave more room for interesting characters and interaction between them.

Hargrove left, but he had paved the way for better days to come. Between 1973 (The New Mexican Connection) and 1976 (Night of the Shark), under the auspices of producers Michael Gleason, Ron Satlof and Lou Shaw, memorable and excellent episodes were churned out by the dozen. During its peak it was top-notch, perfect entertainment without any real competitor within the confines of its genre.
Glamorous guest stars included Danny Thomas (Shivaree), Eric Braeden (The Million Dollar Roundup), singers Rick Nelson and John Denver, Bernadette Peters (The Day New York Turned Blue), Robyn Millan (The Barefoot Girls of Bleecker Street), and Barbi Benton (Park Avenue Pirates). Stefanie Powers and Jaclyn Smith who were to have their own long-running prime-time series appeared twice. Others who liked McCloud enough to come back for more were Susan Strasberg, Julie Sommars, Patrick O'Neal, Lloyd Bochner, Robert Webber. The format worked so well that even chase sequences done on the cheap in This Must Be The Alamo and Night Of the Shark as well as silly slapstick elements (the catfight in Butch Cassidy Rides Again) could not do any damage to these all-time classics.

In the last season McCloud clearly lost some of its impetus. The episodes are not downright bad but they lack that extra bit of everything which made McCloud at its best so special, a fact which appearances by Jane Seymour (The Great Taxi Cab Stampede), Columbo antagonist Jack Cassidy (London Bridges) and John Carradine (McCloud Meets Dracula) could not hide away. The late 1980s attempt to send Dennis Weaver (like Peter Falk) back on the road remained (unfortunately) a one-time experiment. McCloud was an action man. An elderly McCloud, therefore, could not work well.
Larson's long-running series after McCloud, Quincy, M.E., The Fall Guy and Knight Rider, never come close to the series by any means. The only real smash hit was the pilot film for Magnum, p.i., for which Larson received a co-creator credit. Its success and its sophisticated episodic format, however, has largely been attributed to co-writer and Executive Producer Don Bellisario (see separate entry).
I have to finish on a rather sad note: casual work like directing the The Park Avenue Rustlers was the occupation of the late Jack Arnold (1916-1990?); cult director for several generations of science fiction and horror fans, best remembered for The Incredible Shrinking Man, It Came from Outer Space, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Tarantula. Larson obviously was an Arnold fan and occasionally gave him something to chew (The Fall Guy etc). Arnold still had an office in Universal City but his projects failed to attract interest from producers. He was, therefore, unable to repeat his early successes was left to oblivion. 1975 saw Arnold's brief return to the big screen when he made the Thriller The Swiss Conspiracy. In 1983 the German WDR-TV team disturbed his involuntary retirement when they shot interview footage for the "Jack Arnold narrates/comments" series which was to accompany screenings of his hits. I leave an appropriate conclusion to Christopher Wicking and Tise Vahimagi:

"[Arnold's] detective series contain one pure delight, The Park Avenue Rustlers, which was directed with all Arnold's old force and vigour and featured a helicopter chase with some of the most breathtaking stunting seen in movies or TV." (The American Vein, p. 119)
