Es ist eigentlich nicht zu fassen, aber von diesem erfolgreichsten britischen TV-Exportartikel der letzten 15 Jahre sind in Deutschland nur eine Handvoll Folgen im DDR-Fernsehen gelaufen. In den deutschen Sendeanstalten ist wohl die Meinung vorherrschend, das Morse-Terrain sei mit Derrick hinreichend abgedeckt. Ein ebenso erbärmlicher wie tragischer Irrtum. Die Serie, entwickelt von Kenny McBain, basiert auf Romanen von Colin Dexter, die anfangs und dann wieder mit The Way Through the Woods zu Drehbüchern umgearbeitet wurden. Sie wurde mit zum Trendsetter des britischen TV- Detektivfilms, mit Poirot und PD James Mysteries. Die meisten Folgen sind Originaldrehbücher. Morse ist wie Redcap, The Sweeney, Mitch, You Again, Kavanagh QC und anderen um John Thaw (gest. 2002), dem britischen TV-Darsteller par excellence, herumkonzipiert.
